Description
The gateway-switcher script intelligently manages which gateway (router or upstream connection) a system uses to access the internet or external networks. It continuously tests the reachability and latency of configured gateways and switches to the most reliable one based on real-time performance.
This script is commonly used in environments with dual-WAN setups, cellular failovers, or multi-router homes and offices. It ensures that even if one gateway becomes unresponsive or degraded, the system will route through the better-performing one without user intervention.
It can be configured to operate in fully automatic mode or manually prompted. Logs typically include timestamps, previous and current gateway IPs, reason for the switch (e.g., packet loss or timeout), and test results.
On the advanced side, the script can also support weighted balancing or thresholds (e.g., only switch if latency exceeds 100ms or if packet loss reaches 10%). This flexibility makes it a powerful tool for maximizing uptime in mission-critical systems.
